As part of MCWs ongoing partnership with Het Nieuwe Instituut, we collaborate in this event in the context of Dutch Design Week.

How do we go beyond the “smart city” and build a smart society? The DATAstudio has spent three years studying how citizens and neighbourhoods can benefit from data and technology. The international conference Finale: A City as Smart as Its Citizens will present the project’s findings and results in the Dutch and international contexts. Speakers will include Drew Hemment(FutureEverything), Maya Indira Ganesh (Tactical Technology Collective) and Usman Haque (Umbrellium). The event is moderated by Michiel de Lange (Co.Laborations Expertise Centre, Utrecht University Media & Culture Studies department).

On 26 October at 13:00 in Het Huis, students from the MA program New Media & Digital Culture (dep. Media and Culture Studies) will publicly present the preliminary results of their work. One set of teams present their quest to create engaging stories and interfaces that open up cartographic archives to a general audience. Another set of teams will present their work on computational methods, data and visualisations, under the supervision of Tim de Winkel and with assistance of Utrecht Dataschool. The event is developed in close association with the 2017 IMPAKT Festival, themed “Haunted Machines, Wicked Problems”. Team presentations are followed by responses and reflections by Kristen Gwinn-Becker from HistoryIT over Skype.

Jasmijn van Gorp, Michiel Kamp and Michiel de Lange are planning an event around Copyright, Authorship, and Open Culture mini-conference, for Spring next year. The aim is to inform the importance of copyright when studying Media and Culture; investigate and articulate a role for MCW in societal discussions about cultural production and open culture; explore the added value of MCW as a partner for professional organizations, e.g. by thinking through concepts and ethics; explore a link with education and the prospective working field of our students.
