Co.Lab Symposium Copyright, Authorship, and Open Culture

What roles do issues of copyright play in contemporary media and ‘open culture’? How can scholars of media and culture contribute to these societal and cultural questions? Researchers and practitioners will convene on these matters in a mini symposium on Tuesday, May 8th, focusing on case studies proposed by two experts from the field of copyright. Ñusta Nina (@nustanina), legal counsel and lecturer at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, will speak about copyright and meme culture. Bart van de Lisdonk (@BartvandeL), film composer, will present a case on ‘forced’ publishing in music and media.

After introducing their case studies, the two speakers will enter into a discussion with a number of respondents from the department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University, guided by a few provocative statements. Afterwards, there will be room for further conversation with drinks at Parnassos’s bar.
