Urban screens, media facades, public kiosks, travel monitors, and smartphones are among the countless screens that permeate our urban environments, granting urban denizens access to local data and information feeds. Yet the screen-based interface and its prioritization of visualization privilege particular ways of knowing the city. Given the myriad forms of “intelligence” embedded into and flowing through our urban landscapes, perhaps we should think more expansively about what an urban interface can be, and how it can function as an epistemic and affective frame.
