Eliot String Quartet in Parnassos, 24 May 2017 17:00-18:15, Theatre Parnassos

You are all warmly invited to a Co.Laborations event on music and media in the Parnassos Theatre on 24 May.

The Eliot String Quartet will be giving a workshop on the role of old and new media (instruments, scores, iPads) in historical musical performance. The quartet specialises in the historically informed performance of eighteenth and nineteenth-century music. During this workshop the quartet will play sections of Beethoven’s late string quartets and discuss how they creatively negotiate the complex interrelations between parts and scores (in different editions), instruments, fellow performers, and the rich performance history of these works.

The workshop will be led by Rachel Stroud, second violinist of the quartet and PhD candidate at King’s College, University of Cambridge. The quartet is here on my invitation as part of my Veni project on Notation Cultures, investigating the role of the media of music notation in the creative practice of music.

The quartet consists of:

Rebecca Huber, violin (artistic director and concert master of Symphonie Atlantique; teacher at Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag)

Rachel Stroud, violin (co-founder of Symphonie Atlantique; PhD candidate at King’s College, University of Cambridge)

Samuel Kennedy, viola (Symphonie Atlantique)

Rebecca Rosen, cello (co-founder of Collegium Musicum, Den Haag)

This event will take place on Wednesday 24 May, 17:00-18:15, in the Theatre of Parnassos.

The event is a pilot for a series of “Music Co.Labs” in the course of next year. It is hoped such a series of events will stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations investigating the value of Media & Performance Studies to the study of musical performance and creativity, and vice versa.
